Dismantling Your Fears
We all have fears that hold us back from seizing opportunities and stepping into our true potential. These fears, often learned from past experiences and stories we've been told, can keep us playing small and prevent us from becoming who we are truly capable of being.
The truth is, many successful individuals experience fear but choose to act in spite of it. They have learned to question their fears, digging deep to understand their origins. More often than not, these fears are based on assumptions that don't reflect reality.
Now let's explore the mechanics of fear:
Our brains are constantly predicting future outcomes based on past experiences to keep us safe and navigate our lives. However, these predictions are not grounded in fact; they stem from our interpretations of reality, shaped by our beliefs, experiences, and conditioning.
For example: two people can attend the same event and have entirely different experiences. One might see it as a fantastic networking opportunity, while the other fears judgment and believes there's little to gain. The event itself remains unchanged; it's the narrative each person creates that shapes their experience and outcomes.
And here's the crazy part: both narratives are not true.
Neither person knows what will truly happen until the event unfolds. Yet, the story they tell themselves significantly influences their experience.
Fear manifests as a protective mechanism, alerting us to the potential dangers of the narrative we predict.
But what if that narrative is flawed?
What if it's based on outdated beliefs or irrelevant experiences!
Think about a specific fear you may be struggling with right now: Perhaps it's starting a business, ending a relationship, moving to a new city, or pursuing a long-held dream.
Now, ask yourself:
What story am I telling myself?
What do I fear might go wrong?
Am I worried about others' opinions?
What failures am I trying to avoid?
Take some time to write down these narratives. Getting them out of your head and onto paper allows you to examine them closely.
Next, ask yourself:
How do I know if these stories are true?
Are they based on facts, assumptions, or past experiences?
Do they reflect who I am today or who I was years ago, when I had less knowledge and experience?
You will often find that your fears lack a solid foundation. They are frequently rooted in assumptions; beliefs treated as facts by your brain - also known as confirmation bias.
If you assume rejection, your brain will highlight every sign of potential dismissal while overlooking acceptance.
If you fear failure, your focus will be on potential pitfalls, ignoring the opportunities for success.
If you doubt your worth, you'll collect evidence of inadequacy while dismissing your strengths.
These assumptions craft your reality, and your fears often reflect negative predictions.
But what if you could challenge these assumptions?
What if you could scrutinize them to discern which are true and which are mere stories you've internalized?
Today I call you to commit to questioning the narratives you have built, and begin to rewrite your stories.
If you find that difficult to do, I totally understand. That was me not too long ago.
